After driving through some beautiful villages outside Phrae, today started with a Special Speed Test on tarmac in the middle of the rice fields. Maybe we could have done better time wise but our main aim is to get to Yangon (Rangoon). Lunch was in a village with beautiful traditional houses. The final section was a tricky regularity test full of sweeping bends with sharp climbs. The locals have been extremely enthusiastic to see all the vintage and classic cars racing through Thaïland.
Tomorrow will be a rest day in Chiang Mai. We will be busy preparing the Karmann Ghia for the rough tracks in Burma.
We are not the only ones to have had some mechanical issues to deal with. Our close friends Clemens and Agneta Lansing in the light blue Mercedes Ponton have broken a drive shaft in the second test yesterday and are stranded in Phrae. They should be able to rejoin us tomorrow. About four gear boxes have been replaced in other cars. One mechanic specialised in vintage Chevrolets has already made the roundtrip between the UK and the Rallye twice. The car park is busy with participants reparing their cars every evening.
