Heading out of Mawlamyine, we drove over the Thanlwin Bridge, the longest in Myanmar. Pagodas line the countryside and young monks walk in long queues to collect rice from the population. The initial stretch of the route is a reminder of what traffic here is all about. Those who have driven in Africa were well prepared for the dense traffic with lorries, bicycles, rickshaws, busses etc; all on the same road and the same lane. The local drivers flash their outer lights to indicate that it is clear for you to overtake; however they also do so if they intend to pull out... Slightly confusing.
The atmosphere is the most friendly one could possibly imagine. Families and children were standing on the way side of the streets and wave as the rally cars drove by. The Burmese must be the most welcoming people on this planet.
The only motorway of the country then took us to the new capital Nay Pyi Taw.
Tomorrow competition resumes with a regularity test.
